What’s The Problem?
There is a major problem facing EVERY developed country in the World and it’s getting worse. You’ve read about it in the newspapers, seen it on the TV and everybody is talking about it. What is it?
Homes give off too much CO2 and cost too much to heat and run as oil and gas prices soar and they slowly run out. How can we deal with it?
Throughout the World Governments have agreed on measures that every home should undertake to reduce carbon emissions and slowly get consumers more used to using alternative renewable (or green) energy solutions.
Currently, less than 2% of a typical home’s energy consumption comes from renewable sources such as solar power. By 2016 all new homes need to generate at least 15% of their energy from renewable sources. This is a legal requirement that will affect us all over the next 5 or so years.
On top of this all homes being sold or rented require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which tells the owner of the property what it currently consumes in energy and gives out in CO2 and also recommends ways of saving money. During 2008 well over 1,000,000 EPC certificates have been issued and most homeowners have been told of ways to improve their homes' energy efficiency and save money. The savings can range from many hundreds and potentially run to thousands of pounds per year if simple energy efficiency measures are undertaken. These measures can include cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and solar hot water generation. To help out the British Government is offering grants of up to 80% of the cost of the work required and in some instances it is FREE to the home owners providing they use properly accredited Domestic Green Engineers.
